This-That journaling is a journaling practice that asks you to compare two (or more) concepts that you feel have a relationship worth exploring.

The purpose of this practice is to increase discernment and precision in your understanding of the concepts, the relationships between them, as well as how they feel, look, and more until their nature becomes clear and their behavior distinct.

The concepts do not have to relate to your inner world.

This-That journaling is an exercise of clarity and practice distinguishing, regardless of the subject matter.

Here are some example concepts to explore (I've explored these in my own journal).

  • Interesting ⇄ Stimulating

  • Eloquent ⇄ Articulate

  • Paradox ⇄ Circular

  • Intentional ⇄ Mindful ⇄ Deliberate

  • Patience ⇄ Tolerance

  • Happiness ⇄ Contentment

  • Momentum ⇄ Inertia

  • Notice ⇄ Wonder

  • Understand ⇄ Appreciate
