This & That journaling is a reciprocal journaling practice that asks you to compare two (or more) concepts that you feel have a relationship worth exploring. In a This ⇄ That entry, you analyze these relationships and explore the concepts individually. Essentially, you are mining for nuance and relativity.
The purpose of this practice is to increase discernment and precision in your comprehension of the concepts, the relationships between them, how they feel, look, and further details until their nature becomes clear and their behavior distinct.
The concepts do not have to relate to your inner world.
This ⇄ That journaling is an exercise of clarity, regardless of the underlying motivation for exploring topics.
I've used This ⇄ That journaling to prepare me to discuss overlapping concepts with my students (mathematical and scientific subtopics).
Here are some example concepts to explore (I've explored these in my own journal).
Interesting ⇄Stimulating
Eloquent ⇄ Articulate
Paradox ⇄ Circular
Intentional ⇄ Mindful
Patience ⇄ Tolerance
Happiness ⇄ Contentment
Momentum ⇄ Inertia
Notice ⇄ Wonder
