What is a Tendril in Journaling?

Tendril are your journaling tangents. Those side topics that branch from your "main" one.

Why are Tendrils Important?

As you journal and follow the tendrils, they collect bits of understanding.

They pickup context and hidden variables, that support you as you you clarity.

The provide depth through nuanced exploration.

Examples

  • A gratitude journaling entry about a good day at work leading into an entry about career planning.

  • An entry intended for immediate catharsis leading into the root of the pain.

Take Note:

A tendrils are not a requirement of journaling. Please avoid the idea that you must strive for depth and nuance, as complete exploration is not reliant on tendrils; the sky is blue and that is clear without tendrils of exploration.

What I want you to take away is that tendrils (or tangents) are not distractions or side quests. They are a biproduct of depth.

You Try

The next time you feel the urge to journal about a connected topic, no matter how loose the connection is, follow it and when you reflect on the entry, try to identify and name what links them.
